Since Christmas is looking far from festive this year and while they're not necessarily going to put you in a Christmassy mood, we have compiled a list of weirdly appropriate films / series to help you escape over the festive period and beyond.
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) 
A woman wakes up from a coma in an underground bunker with two men. She is told a chemical attack has made the air unbreathable, and that they need to remain inside the bunker in order to survive.

Ancient Aliens (Series, 2009 - )

A documentary series in which investigators search of evidence to determine if aliens had influence on humans in ancient times. 

"Truth seeking saviours"

Arrival (2016) 

A linguistics professor leads investigators to communicate with extraterrestrial visitors when gigantic spaceships land in 12 locations around the world.  

"Lost in translation.. but make it future."


Demolition Man (1993)

Two old nemesis's Phoenix and and Spartan are sentenced to be cryogenically frozen in 1996. When the dangerous criminal Phoenix is unfrozen and escapes years later, Spartan is also unfrozen to pursue his old nemesis, at loose in a future society where all crime has been eliminated.

 eXistenZ (1999)

After the designer of virtual reality video game 'eXistenZ', Allegra, is targeted by assassins, she goes on the run in attempt to save the game. She implants a damaged copy of the game into Ted and the pair experiences a series of events that further blur the boundaries of fantasy and reality.

"Biological games console warping your reality? Exactly what I want for xmas!" 

The Holy Mountain (1973) 

In this Mexican surreal fantasy film, a master leads a messianic figure and his group of disciples to the Holy Mountain, where they hope to find enlightenment.

Kwaidan (1964) 

Kwaidan takes its meaning from an archaic Japanese word meaning "ghost story", this anthology adapts four folk tales.

The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) 

Thomas is an alien who has come to earth in search of water to save his home planet. While developing a method to transport it, Thomas is discovered by the US government and his entire plan is threatened.

Spirited Away (2001)

Chihiro and her parents stumble upon what seems like an abandoned amusement park. After feasting in a seemingly abandoned restaurant, her parents are turned into pigs and Chihiro learns she must work a the park to free herself and her parents.

Total Recall (1990) 

Set in the year 2084, a construction worker dreams of visiting Mars. As a way to achieve this dream, he visits a company which plants false memories into human brains.
